Star Wars largely borrows from many Japanese films, right? Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress inspired New Hope! A lot of other directors also borrowed and are borrowing from other Japanese films from that era to this day. I think it is fair to say that these films had a large impact across the Pacific!

In 1990, Kurosawa received a honorable award from the Motion Picture Academy. He was 80 years old. The presenters were Lucas and Spielberg. I was impressed when Spielberg said in Japanese "先生、どうぞ", calling him to the stage. I felt his deep respect for Kurosawa. Unfortunately, Kurosawa's speech was too serious and I wish there had been more jokes. Japanese people think that it is for comedians, not serious people, to make jokes in such honorable situations. The attendees sang a song for him, "Happy Birthday, Kurosawa!"
