I recently learned how to conjugate verbs into the present tense, and i learned that what you have to do is add 아요/어요 to the verb stem (except for the verb 하다 that becomes 해요), so, for the verb 무겁다, why is the conjugation 무거워요, and not 무겁어요?

well that's due to the linguistic change during 17th~18th century, i only know that as i'm not an expert of language history 😅

anyway, verbs and adjectives(predicates) with ㅂ batchim before -다 go through the change of ㅂ to ㅗ/ㅜ. and when these ㅗ/ㅜ attaches to 아/어(which is the ending), they become 와/워.
this is why it becomes 무거워요, not 무겁어요.
