well... not so easy to give a complete and satisfying answer.
basically imperfetto is used to express continuous actions in the past, or repetitive actions in the past.
passato prossimo is used for finished actions in the past.
examples:
quando andavo a scuola, avevo sempre con me il mio diario (continuous)
ogni anno passavamo le vacanze a Rimini (repetitive)
l'anno scorso abbiamo passato le vacanze a Rimini (finished, one shot).
