A more common expression is "dwelling on the past" - this could be good or bad memories. (It can also mean someone "carries a grudge" against someone for an unpleasant event.)

@Geeverny So instead of saying dwelling on past successes, people pretty much just say don’t dwell on the past without saying what kind of things to dwell on specifically?

If it's a conversation then the topic being discussed or 'dwelled upon', by one of the people conversing, is usually already known. So, yes, it is usually just 'don't dwell on the past' if you think that isn't helping the person to move forward.
If someone is simply happily reminiscing (remembering) then I probably wouldn't say it.
