I don’t think renewable energy can replace fossil fuels. Difficulty of complete replacement of fossil fuels to renewable energy sources can be understood by three reasons, shortage of land, increasing energy consumption, the storage problem.

First, There aren’t enough space for solar panels and dams to produce enough renewable energy to sustain all countries. Technology improvement could improve efficiency of renewable energy production to some degree, but it is estimated that it is far from present total energy consumption.

Additionally, the amount of energy consumption is increasing as many countries is developing.

Finally, renewable energy such as hydrogen and electricity which is produced from sun light, is hard to restore. Hydrogen is said to be clean energy, which produce only water as it burn. But hydrogen is gas in contrast to petroleum, hydrogen storage needs liquidation, which leads to substantial energy loss. When we store electricity, we need butteries, so we need additional space for butteries and suffer from energy loss accompanied by energy storage.

Because of reasons above, it is realistic to utilize both fossil fuels and renewable energy in the future.
