"You mustn’t speak a word until I say so."
Could you explain to me what this sentence means?

Here is the context(an extract from "Alice in wonderland"):

Soon Alice came to where the Turtle was sitting on a large rock. Its eyes were full of tears.

Sit down,” the Turtle said to Alice, “and I’ll tell you my story. You mustn’t speak a word until I say so.”

Alice sat down and waited for the Turtle to begin. She had to wait a long time, but at last, the Turtle said, “I used to go to school every day.”

“So did I,” Alice remarked. “That’s nothing to be proud of.” “Did you have electives?” the Turtle asked.
