You most likely won't see one unless you're out in the bush. If you are in the city you probably won't see any.
I've only seen one or two and that was way out in the bush towards central Australia and I've lived here my whole life.
If you ever go into the Australian bush and your worried about snakes wear some high leather boots. My uncle goes bushwalking often and he wears them to protect his legs from potential snakes.

Snake are a problem when it come to summer, though you will rarely ever see a snake in the city. You are more likely to see them in small local towns or in the scrub/bush. If you are in the scrub I suggest closed in shoes they don't have to be high leather boots, a pair of sneakers will do.
