Ciao!
Good question! 😉
In football/sport a Contropiede is the English counterattack(when you are quickly responding to the attack, and the opposite team is outgunned with many players still in advanced position).
We don't often use the term counterattack in sports, but when we do, it could be also referred to a generic strike-back attack in a shorter amount of time.
Regarding other fields...for example War/history... Counter attack must be simpy translated with contrattacco, not with contropiede...that's typically a sport term. 👍🏻
Finally...in a real life situation, we used the word Contropiede in some figurative speech expressions, for saying "caught off guard" / "not expected" / "by surprise"...
Example:
- Mi hai preso in contropiede!
(you caught me off guard!)

-Preso in contropiede: vuol dire che non me lo aspettavo
-Usare un contrattacco: come nei videogiochi, deve reagire ad un primo attacco, attaccare a tua volta
