Actually, gyre IS used in geographic terms - it's a large system of rotating ocean currents, particularly those involved in wind movements. It can be used as a synonym for vortex, but it's most commonly only used in oceanography.

^ ah yes this is true I apologise as I had never come across the word in geographical terms before but gyre is in fact used in oceanography - not with whirlwinds though

Well yeah, but we weren't talking about whirlwinds, we were talking about vortices. Technically, a gyre is a vortex. =)

Thanks for your splendid answers, I have one final question though, can gyre be used in an astronomical context as well? I came across this word in an astronomical context, but I'm wondering if gyre in that context was just a stylistic variation of vortex, or is actually used in astronomical contexts as it is in oceanography?
- Inglese (Regno Unito)
Not that I'm aware of. One could, I guess, refer to a spiral galaxy or something as being a gyre, but that seems rather poetic.
What's the context, exactly?

Well that was exactly the context, it was referring to a galaxy, I'm not sure whether it was a spiral galaxy or not, but that seems rather likely. It basically was just the caption of an image I found on the Internet.
