yes I understand..... "nerds and geeks" used to be a BAD thing to call people, until we all discovered how much we NEED them. I think maybe GEEK is more associated with computers.. and this is why best buy named their people the GEEK SQUAD. that was really the first time i had ever heard GEEK used in a nice / good way.
but you can say 'computer nerd' just like.. "computer geek". I think it's not a terrible thing (now) to say. it can refer to people who are great with technology, computers etc.
but also.. you could call someone a 'math nerd' meaning they are really (obsessively) good with math. but you could also say 'math geek'.
another thing i'm thinking.. people who are very involved with the theatre... call themselves "theatre geeks".
i think maybe the difference is.. if the people are calling THEMSELVES a geek or a nerd.. than it's ok. if you call someone that.. maybe it's a little offensive. (because it can also imply -- sometimes correctly -- that a person is socially awkward).
that's a lesson for today!

@emtrivoli thank you so much!
does geek sounds more savvy and nerd sounds more awkward in any sense?
like Bestbuy names its tech support service the Geek Squad. and some people say, ### is a computer geek.
while in movies, the awkward boys are always called a nerd.
hope you know what I'm trying to describe.

@emtrivoli i think maybe the us society has under valued science and technology from the social perspective, since there are science nerds and mad scientists but there are no mad poets and English nerds.
all the movies promote socially fluent sexy looking people and mock the naive and knowledge driven guys.
I'm thinking this movie "bad neighbor" , Zac Efron's character has a sexy built but flunk his studies. However , Seth Logan's wife still wants to flirt with him from time to time , portrayed in a not so negative way LOL.
I think maybe that's why america nowadays imports scientists and engineers from abroad. why do Americans like to be socially apt so much?
But on the other hand, a lot of the literature/ humanity positions are underpaid, compared with the big pays in the tech sector, this on the other hand distresses the arts/humanity side.
to sum from these, i think maybe the mainstream American culture appreciate something that can be easily seen or grasped: socially brilliant people can be easily seen, matured technology can be easily seen, while the subtle and the still-brewing stuff can't be easily seen and grasped, and are thus not that much appreciated.
Do you agree with such observation?
