"It's a thing" can be a casual way to say something that's commonly done. For example, some workplaces in the US allow people to wear jeans on Fridays instead of formal work clothes. And a friend might ask you, why do you wear jeans to work on Friday and you can respond with "Oh it's a thing (we do at work)". Or maybe you and your friends always eat at the same restaurant everytime you see each other, that's also "a thing (that you all do)". It's a little confusing to explain but you can think of it as "it's a thing that happens" or "it's a thing that we often do". Hope that makes some sense 😅
