Basically, Japanese name has its meaning ( because it is an ideographic language ). For example, 春樹(村上) is Spring Tree, and 龍一(坂本) is First Dragon.
Then, how do you name your child? English names seem not to have its meaning.
You name after people in history with same name?
Or, going back to Latin, Greek, Spanish or such like etymology and choose good meaning?

Some people will look over the roots of the names they have in mind to find the ones with meanings they like, but more often than not nowadays I see people naming their children because they liked the name or how it sounded to them. Sometimes they use the names of relatives for their kids too.

Thank you.
I have wondered why they name their children the name of relatives.
Aren't they confused whether the name mean?
In Japan, same names of relatives tend to be avoided to name new one.

They give their children the names of relatives as a way or honoring them and sometimes it's more or less a family tradition to do so. There is a chance for confusion, but that's something to worry about more if that relative is still living or is someone the family interacts with often.

In Japan, I have often heard cases that one gave his/her child a name after a historical or fictional figure or one of their best friends.
We sometimes pick a kanji letter from someone's name and add one or two letters to create a new name. As far as I know, this way is more popular to honor relatives than copying their name, though the way is not a taboo and sometimes found.

Many of our names have meaning, but the meanings were derived from other languages several hundred years ago and are not known now. Most English speakers choose names they think sound nice.

In Japan, we also have some kanji letters like them.
Some letters in a name are hardly recognized its meaning by the owner self or their parents who gave them their name.

Some people name their children with names that mean something in English, like "Ruby" or "Pearl" or "Rose" or "Lily" or "May" or "Misty" for girls.
Some people choose names for their original meaning in a different language (such as Latin or Greek).
Most people don't care about the meaning and choose the name based on sound, appearance, and sometimes popularity. (If they name it after a celebrity, fictional character, friend, or family member, then it is to honor that person.)
For example, my name is Tamara. In Hebrew, it means "palm tree". My mom chose it because it is a unique name in America and it sounds beautiful, not because she loves palm trees.

My sister and I have middle names based on my mother's first and middle name. My sister's first name is from a deceased aunt. My name is 'Robin' which is a type of bird. My parents just chose is because it was unique but not too strange. My dad is the oldest of his siblings so was named after his father and if I had been a boy I would have been the third to have that name.
Names from the Bible seem to be the most popular.

It is an interesting language difference. There are quite a few English names that correspond to things ("Rose", "Robin", etc.) But English speakers don't think of names in relation to the literal meaning of the name. It's more about the sound of the name. There is a trend in the past 10-20 years to make up new names with no meaning or tradition. But that is still fairly unusual.

most people pick first names that they like the sound of, and then if they want to honor their relatives, they put their first names as the middle name of the child, and then pass down the fathers last name.
