"vestito" is more casual and general.
"abito" is more formal.

"vestito" has a verb "vestire" / "vestirsi", to dress, to wear.
While "abito" doesnt have a verb, you'll say: "vestire un abito", "mettere un abito", "portare un abito".
Note that "abito" also refers to the verb "abitare": to inhabit/reside, first person singular present tense. But "abitare" means "to live in a house/country".

There is a slight nuance that "vestito" is more for women. So "abito" is "suit" and "vestito" is "dress".

Typically if you go to a very elegant party they might ask to put on a tuxedo. They will ask "Alla festa è obbligatorio indossare un abito".
