When asking if a restaurant has a seat or table available in Italian, is it correct to use “avere” as in, can I “have” a table… for example: “posso avere un tavolo” or is there a better way to ask for a table or chair to sit at without using “avere”? Or is “avere” the correct way to ask…

Mmmh, you wouldn't ask it that way, I think most commonly you ask the restaurant if they have a table, so "avete un tavolo per X persone ?"
