"they sell books as well as newspapers" is more formal than "they sell books and newspapers". Both are correct and sound natural, but "they sell books and newspapers" will be used in everyday speech whereas "they sell books as well as newspapers" will probably not be used in everyday speech. "As well as" will be used mostly for formal papers or work, or when talking to an important person formally. However, you will NOT be punished for using "and" instead of "as well as". Most people will not notice, and using "and" is not a sign of disrespect.
