General career objective advice is to focus on the next 5 years, then the next 1 or 2 years, then the present day.

So for example:

Alexander is a 17 yr old high school student.

At most, he should think about his career goal for when he is 22. This could be a goal such as “By the time I’m 22, I would like to be graduating from undergraduate college with a degree in subject X”.

Then, “Over the next year, my goal is to apply to 10 colleges. Hopefully I will be accepted to one of these 3 schools A, B, or C as they are my top choices.”

Then, “For the moment, my other goal is to maintain my grades. I also recently started volunteering at an after-school youth program, and my goal for the next few months there is to gain skills in P, Q, and R”
