Is it common for Americans to give their friends some cash (about USD 19.5) as a birthday present? An American said that they're thinking to give their Korean friend the money to celebrate the friend's birthday. As a Korean, I would feel really weird if my friend gave me 19 dollars on my birthday. We don't usually give cash to friends as a birthday present.

I think it depends on your friendship but it can also depend on a person's financial situation. A lot of people consider anything like money or an equivalent (like gift cards) to be a bad gift because it shows that the person doesn't know you well enough or didn't put any effort to try to buy something that you would like. For friends, I would say that it is pretty common for people to buy gifts around that value, like maybe 20-30$, but if you are really good friends with someone, some people may get something more expensive.

I don't know why it would be $19.50. Where did this amount come from? And even though I see nothing wrong with giving money as a birthday present I don't think I've ever given money to someone who was just a friend. Maybe a family member or someone very special.

@HebrewDane Thank you for the response. That amount was mentioned in the American's question posted in the Korean section.
(KRW 25,000 = about USD 19.5 )

They seemed to think that about USD19 is an okay amount to buy something to eat for one person.
I've become curious about the birthday gift culture in the US after I saw the post.
Here, too. We give money(usually much more than USD19.5) to family members or someone special.

it’s usually considered a low effort/unthoughtful gift. if i ever get cash for my birthday, in comes in birthday cards usually from older family members like a grandma or aunt (so it’s not really considered a present because it’s part of the card). however people sometimes give people gift cards, which are considered a bit more thoughtful because the gift card should be relevant to that persons likes or interests (such as a starbucks or ulta gift card), so it takes some more consideration. still not super personal though, so people usually just buy something instead of giving them money
