Normally we pronounce 'ie' as one sound (for example: 'niet').
In some words 'i' and 'e' are two separate sounds. Then we add two dots to the 'e'.
For example: ingrediënten, cliënt, patiënt (English: ingredients, client, patient)
The two dots are called a 'trema' in Dutch.
