Sì ok.
Puoi anche mettere "prima" davanti alla frase, è un avverbio, certe volte può stare anche davanti al verbo. In questo caso aumenta il focus su "earlier, before".

This tense is very common in Romance languages but Italian is a special case. The "copula" between the gerund verb (-ing / -ndo) and the verb "to be/exist" (the copula itself) indicates an action that continues and at the same time the existence of the subject while performing it.
In English it's linear because you literally say "I am" and while you exist you act with the gerund verb. You can also reverse it by saying that.. since I'm doing an action that continues over time.. I exist.
The thing is almost philosophical if you think about it for a moment, an action takes place and continues over time if an external element acts on it. That element obviously "exists".
The only problem is that in Italian, the verb "to be / exist" is replaced by "to stay".😅
