Since we are a vertical relationship society, we tend to use the term " Oppa " or "Hyeong ". It sounds familiar to us.

@DannyJoung So it doesn't phase you if a foreigner calls you 'Oppa'? I am just asking because reactions have been mixed so far.

@beloved_narae I think it's OK for foreigners to use that words in the proper situation. However, if you talk to that word for someone you see 'first', even Koreans will be embarrassed. So it's okay to talk like that to someone who well known each other.

Because the word " Oppa " means " Big Brother ". in other words, It's a sign that women think are familiar with opponent men.

@DannyJoung Of course. For example, I called a very good friend of mine oppa(which he is used to) but other Korean guys react very weird when they hear me call him that

@beloved_narae It may be that the other male is reluctant to accentuate his age difference. As I said, we are a society where we respect older people. But among friends, they can be comfortable without such cultural background. So some people may dislike Formal word, such as " Oppa " or " Hyeong. "

I don't know why...... But foreigner speak 오빠 or 형, it's kind of weird. I think we communicate each other by english. So it's weird when mix with 오빠/형. I like just call my english name.
If we communicate by Full Korean sentence.... maybe it's okay

@DannyJoung I mean that they are taken aback from me calling him that. he is comfortable. Other people not so much.

I think it will be weird for me to call someone 오빠 too when we're used to our own language of calling friends by their name or nickname.

@beloved_narae Hmm.. Perhaps they did not think that foreigners knew the word. So I suppose when you mention that word, they were surprised.
