I would say どこに手袋を忘れてきたんだ? to myself in this case.
忘れて行った indicate the actions of others.

Hmm, if you mentioned ていく(て行く) vs てくる(て来る), 忘れていた(忘れて居た) in the former sentence is incorrect. It should be 忘れていった(忘れて行った). 忘れて居た and 忘れて行った are different.
行く is 'go' and 来る is 'come' as you know. And て works 'connect two sentences'.
彼は本を忘れた。+ 行った(gone, left)。 = 彼は本を忘れて行った。
彼は本を忘れた。+ 来た(came here)。 = 彼は本を忘れて来た。
忘れ + ていく/てくる -- incorrect understanding
忘れて + いく/くる -- correct understanding
て is a 'Verb conjugation'.
