How does the education system work in France?

School is mandatory from 6 to 16 yo

The typical cursus is the following:

3-5 yo : école maternelle (3 years, not mandatory : 1re section, 2e section, 3e section)
6-10yo : école primaire (5 years : cp, ce1, ce2, cm1, cm2)
11-14yo : collège (4 years: 6e, 5e, 4e, 3e)
15-17yo : lycée (3 years : 2de, 1re, terminale)

Then higher studies: university, institute of technology, specialized schools, etc.

We have a final exam at the end of the collège (brevet) and at the end of lycée/high school (baccalauréat). Admission to higher studies is usually done using the website "APB" (Admission Post Bac)

In highschool there are pre-defined "fields" to go in.
You know how in America they choose their classes for credits? Well in France you can't really do that. You have to choose between general, professional and technological.
If you pick general, you have to choose "literature", "scientific" or "economic".
For each one of those you have to choose a "speciality". As a literature student you can choose an advanced foreign language class, a law class, a film making class, etc etc. A science student can choose additional math/biology/chemistry classes. An economy student can choose additional economy classes,or scipol classes. (There's probably other stuff available, but I'm speaking from experience and it may vary from school to school).
If you choose technology, you can go in a whole bunch of fields, from engineering to more "practical" stuff.
If you choose professional, you have to choose a job to "train" for while having regular classes (English, literature, math...) like cook or carpenter.
