"Solid" by itself has been used as a slang adjective to mean "awesome, cool, etc."
So you can kind of see how people started using "do me a solid" to ask for a favor. It's like saying "do something great for me...".
Here are some examples of how "solid" can be used as an adjective:
(Keep in mind that this was used more in the 70s and 80s. Some people still use it but it's not super common.)
"You should hear this new song. It has a solid beat."
"Oh, man! So solid!"
