It's actually the same between lagi apa and lagi ngapain, usually lagi ngapain use in a casual atmosphere like to friend or someone close

Lagi apa? is commonly used by mentioning subject at the beginning of the question, while lagi ngapain? can be used without subject.
You can practically used both of them but asking lagi apa without mentioning the subject would sound a bit awkward.

@fanadi I think "lagi ngapain" is nowhere near formal. It's colloquial. The formal way of saying that is "sedang apa?"

yes I know colloquial, but if they are compared between the two words, lagi ngpain more formal I mean sound more polite, I'm not saying it's formal word @farhanchanya @amangimam

almost the same, "lagi ngapain" seems your relation with the speaker is closer, i usually say that word to my wife and children. "lagi apa" is more general, i usually say that word to my friends. BUT both forms are informal, so this is unappropriate if you say this to someone higher than you, ex your boss.
