The second sentence is the most correct grammatically.

Can you explain why "happened" cannot be used here? I think it's wrong but I can't figure out why. @Sayuri9

@DavidC96 Happened would be used for a specific event. You haven't said what happened in the desert to make you think there's water here, so you can't use happened here. Sorry for the late response.
