Different names for the evening meal are used in different parts of the U.K., and among people from different groups (e.g. age or social class).
Personally when I hear "supper" I think of a small snack, such as cereal, eaten after dinner before bed.
But, some people say "supper" to mean a main evening meal. My grandmother used to say this, for example.
I say "dinner" to mean an evening meal.
But people from the north of England, for example, often say "dinner" to mean the meal eaten in the middle of the day (lunch); and say "tea" to mean an evening meal.
It can be confusing, even for English people!
But I hope my explanation makes sense.

Me and my UK friend (who is in the north) often have arguments about what the proper words are, since dinner for me is the main evening meal but for him it basically means lunch.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, I find that the UK actually has the most confusing rules or customs about English compared to other countries like US or Australia.
My advice is to follow America and call the evening meal dinner.

Blame it on the Victorians. The main meal of the day was ALWAYS called dinner and was ALWAYS eaten in the middle of the day. The upper classes in Victorian society started to send each other visiting cards inviting people to visit their homes, and it was considered very impolite to refuse a request. As more and more people sent and received these cards, it became more an more difficult to fit in all the visits with the main meal in the middle of the day, so they started to slip the time of the meal later and later but still called it "dinner". As this now resulted in a long gap between breakfast and dinner, some started the habit of having a cup of tea mid afternoon served with bread. This developed into having a cup of tea with cakes, and this became "(high) tea" another meal we have in the UK. "Luncheon" was also introduced for businessmen for the same reason.....
