Why do women call their friends as girlfriend when they're female even though they're not lovers?

It's just a term we use in the US to express a close friendship with or between other girls.

@sayuki00 but if I call a male friend as boyfriend is it weird? Or will people always take "boyfriend" as a man you're having a relationship?

If you break down the word girlfriend > girl > friend. They're girls but friends.

@renatac96 it would be weird for a man to call a male friend a boyfriend unless you are in a romantic relationship.

"Boyfriend" doesn't really have the same double meaning, so some people use "guy friend" instead.

when typing it the word is "girl friend" with a space in the middle same with "boy friend" but men don't call each other that.

It means A Friend who is female, in America it is okay for women to say that but if a man did it they would look strange.

It can be confusing, but just think of it with the same mindset as when you see stereotypical gay guys in movies go "Hey girlfriend"

@renatac96 Nobody knows, lol. 😂

But I think fewer people call their friends "girl friend" recently. As LGBTQ people become more and more visible, people have a harder time understanding when you mean "friend" and when you mean "relationship." I certainly hear the words "girl friend" meaning "friend" less often now.
