You should use "poop kanji practice book". Lol I know it sounds weird. Lol
Poop kanji practice book is now really popular in Japan. Those books are for Japanese elementary school students grade 1 to 6. So you can study kanji from very beginning.

Most Japanese people know about 2000 kanji. Actually we have more but we don't need to know all of them to live in Japan.
If you can't speak Japanese at all, what you need to learn is how to read Hiragana. And if you can read Hiragana and speak some Japanese, I recommend you to use textbook to learn Kanji:)
