Bitte is kinda like a hint for a question sentence.
f.e.
Könnten Sie mich bitte einweisen?
Or:
Bitte kann ich dies/jenes haben?
or just:
Bitte?
While gern geschehen is more like an answer.
f.e.
You ask the question from above, a guide (or Who ever) shows you around and you will say thank you while He might reply: Gern geschehen.
Hope you can understand it. ^^

'Bitte' can be used as 'please' and 'your welcome' whereas 'gern geschehen' stands only for 'your welcome or no problem' (more like 'I enjoyed helping you')

'Bitte' can also be a question asking what the Person you're talking to just said, if you didn't unterstand them.

KittiChaos is right. But when you say Wie bitte? it's even more obvious that you didn't understand them.

You can use both, but "bitte" sounds more formal as "gern geschehen".
It also sounds kind of more professional I think. "gern geschehen", however, can sound a little bit over the top and too friendly and therefore even ironical.
Besides that, "bitte" can also mean "please" and spoken with rising intonation "pardon/what did you say". However, if you wanna say "pardon me" then use. Wie bitte? (as saying just "Bitte ?"can sound rude)
