Longer answer:
Nobody ever really says furl, although is it a perfectly correct word. "Unfurl" is normal when talking about things like flags, awnings, sails, and other large rolled up things which will be hung up in the air after they are unrolled. (It sounds weird to say "I unfurled the carpet" - since this isn't up in the air.) You can even talk about a bird unfurling its wings and taking flight, if you want to be a little poetic... In any case, don't say furl. Nobody will understand what you're talking about. (I've got $100 that says you can live in the US for a decade and never hear anybody say "furl".)
