Alas isn't used in english anymore. It's a word that was used more in the 1600s-1800s. Although they do mean the same thing, unfortunately is more appropriate.

Risposta"I don't dare" is better in casual conversations. "I dare not" sounds very textbook and is not used often when speaking.
