This might be a little too much to ask but im going to Japan in a few months and i wanna learn how to speak Japanese. Is there any basics I need to learn. Thanks

Well, is difficult to point which would be some basics for a conversation to learn, I think meanwhile you should be have one of those travelers phrase books.
Other thing is that Japanese are very kind and you'll be found help almost effortlessly.
Also Japan is looking forward for the Olympics then lot of things are becoming more friendly for the foreigner, so don't need to hesitate for the correct use of the language, but nevertheless more Japanese you know, more things you can do.

For people you don't know, you should ask firstあの～すみません? (ano.. sumimasen?) to get the attention, after that you can start asking whatever you want.For people you know you can call it by her name, or say こんにちは (konnichiha).

If the person don't excuses himself and look at you, then is OK to ask. Maybe the other person would reply:nani = what?hai? = yes?doushita? = what's going?
