In my opinion, the formal form is more important.
actually not only Korean but also every languages that formal form is easier than informal form.
formal form we say to older people, or in public, official situation.
as you know informal form, we say to friends or elder people, or unofficially.

If you are confused with formal and informal speaking, then just think that formal is first. Unless he/she is a little kid, you should talk to him/her using formal form. and later if you get closer with him/her, you can use informal form. but you never use informal speaking to the elderly.
informal / impolite / casual / 해체(hae-che) / 반말(ban-mal):
When you're talking to the same age(friend), someone younger than you, family.
(low formality / low politeness)
informal polite / formal / 해요체(hae-yo-che) / 존댓말(jon-daet-mal):
When you're talking to strangers(someone you don't know), olders (And sometimes use to family)
(low formality / high politeness)
more formal / polite / 합쇼체(hap-sho-che) / 높임말(nop-yeem-mal):
When you're talking to olders, elders, boss, army, officers, everyone.
(high formality / high politeness)
formality: formal / casual
politeness: polite / rude
