Quase nunca usamos “la” no português falado. Mas é mais ou menos uma abreviação de "ela".
Exemplo:
Vou alegrar ela -> Vou alegrá-la.
Mas não precisa aprender isso agora já que está no começo.

I'll try to explain in a easy way, ok?
The oblique pronoun, in portuguese, are:
Singular
1.° person - me
2.° person - te
3.° person - o, a, lhe
Plural
1.° person - nos
2.° person - vos
3.° person - os, as, lhes
The "a", in this case, is the pronoun of the 3.° person of the singular. Exemplo:
"Sabe aquela carta? Estou entregando-a agora" - "Do you know that letter? I'm delivering it now".
But, the oblique pronoun can change depending on the termination of the verb. For exemple, the same sentence rewrited with the verb in the infinitive:
"Sabe aquela carta? Vou entregá-la agora" - "Do you know that letter? I will deliver it now".
So, there is another way to change the oblique pronoun, that is "na". For exemple:
"Sabe aquela carta? Não entregaram-na ainda" - "Do you know that letter? They don't delivered it already."
