No. It's not disrespectful. It depends who you are saying this to. If it's a friend or family member, it's okay. If it's your manager or a stranger, you would say "excuse me"?

depending on who you are talking to can change the way the person understands what you mean by saying "what?". Usually when you talk to family/friends you can say "what" and they won't be phased, but teachersb professors, strangers, or employers could take it as rude so either "excuse me?" or "pardon?" would be best!
