What does し stand for in this sentence, or what function does it cover? This is an exercise on a course I'm taking. The example is:

私は買い物をしに行きます。

But I'm not sure where し is coming from or what it does there, I would've written it like this:

私は買い物をに行きます。

It is the ます stem of the verb する. 私は買い物をしに行きます means "I will go shopping." Putting the ます stem of the verb and adding 行く makes the pattern "to go to do (verb)"

レストランに食べに行きます→I will go to eat at a restaurant.

魚を買いに行きます→I will go to buy fish.

日本に遊びに行きます
I will go to Japan to enjoy myself.

買い物をに行きます is not correct, but nice try! :D The を shouldn't be there at all because it doesn't go with 行く. 行く goes with に and へ. So it should be 買い物に行きます which also translates to "I will go shopping." You never combine the particles を and に.

@Yui-kun I do own a copy but haven't started it yet. I've been using an online course from http://elon.io and the NHK audios. Also "Remembering the Kanji". What's your experience with it?

@danpalacios90 With Genki? Very good! It has created a very strong foundation for me. I even go to it now to remember important vocabulary, and I have already finished both I and II. I have a separare book for intermediate grammar

That's cool to know! I shall start them soon. How long did it take you to go through both books? I've personally focused way more in developing writing/reading skills, found it makes it way easier to acquire vocabulary. I just get lost a lot trying to construct sentences while speaking.

I think し is the second conjugation form of する (to do)
買い物をする → 買い物をし(た/て/に) etc.

@danpalacios90 Well I guess a few months or so, when I really tried comprehended grammar. I too focus more on reading amd writing. I can try speaking but it won't sound too good

@Yui-kun :p same situation. I try to listen to the radio as much as I can to improve that, but there aren't that many people learning 日本語 where I live so I don't use it at all yet. Thanks for the help :D
