Actually, people specially of Southern India can speak it very well, but yeah nearly 90% urban people speak English, but if you communicate with anyone in English, they might either answer your question or in broken English they would tell you to ask someone else or will try to communicate through sign-language.

I agree with tanhan. Not all Indians can speak Hindi, either. There are hundreds of languages spoken in India, which means that if two Indians from different states meet each other, chances are they'll not be able to communicate.

Hindi is spoken mostly in Northern India. Most people in urban India would know how to speak English, although with varying degrees of proficiency, although the majority would only be able to manage small phrases and very simple constructions; they'd also have a heavy accent.

India has around 1600 languages. When the task to make one of the languages the national language there was a big hullabaloo on the same. So english was made the language for all official documents and orders and each state had its own language that it considered the state's language.

Risposta@ledvis Indian constitution recognise 22 language so here different people speak different language but maximum people know Hindi.
