Hello this is Adam, I am currently learning the Japanese language. I know that some words are written in different character sets. For example in "Watashi-wa Amerika kara kimashita," the word "Amerika," is supposed to be written in the Katakana characters.
My question is, how do I know which set of characters to use when writing or typing a certain word ?

If you want to know which character set should be used in several ,
you should try to read "raw" Japanese sentences, written in hiragana, katakana and kanji.
It is difficult that foreign people know when words should be written in CAPITAL, too.

Katakana is often used for loanwords (ex: アメリカ、Tシャツ、アプリケーション) or animals (イヌ、ネズミ、キリン) and mimetic sounds/actions (ドキドキ、キラキラ、ガチガチ) and it can also be used for emphasis. Then you have many words in kanji or with kanji components, and the rest is hiragana. However these are not hard and fast rules, just general guidelines.
