Qual è la differenza tra ber- e men- ?Sentiti libero di rispondere con un esempio.

many verbs in indonesian have a men- or ber- prefix (like menyanyi and bernyanyi), but what is the difference between the two?

actually it was the same. based on your example one of the word is an informal word and the other is formal, but i don't know exactly which one is informal and which one is formal. i'm really sorry

That's not men- but me-. Actually there are slightly different in usage but I can't explain this. it's hard to explain even for native people.

The prefix me- changes to meng- if the basic words beginning with vowels: a, u, i, e, o. like, ubah-> mengubah. uap-> meng-uap.

The prefix also changes to if the following basic word starts with g, h, and k, such as gali-> meng-gali, hitung -> meng-hitung.

Another variation form me-tobe mem- ,if the basic word begins with the letters b, p, v, atau f. like, bantu -> mem-bantu.

@AndreCris_ me- is active form and ber- is the passive one.

they are same. you can use both. but if you want to say what song or anything that you sing. use menyanyikan.
so, saya menyanyikan sebuah lagu (I sing a song) confix me-kan needs object.

they are different in some function. but I can't explain it in english, I'm sorry. you can find more affixes explanation in dictionary.

Ber- prefix means become one/be united or something like 'make it happen' or 'has the output'

e.g.:
•become one•

bersama = together (gathered people in one union)

berkumpul= be gathered

bersatu = be united (make it one)


While,
bernyanyi = make it sing/the output is singing.

Saya bernyanyi dengan mereka.
I sing it with them. (the output is singing/I made myself sing)

Saya bersuara merdu.
I have good voice. (I have the voice (voice as the output) )

menyanyi = bernyanyi

Me- prefix usually can be used as a verb in simple sentence.

e.g.:

I sing a song.
Saya menyanyikan sebuah lagu. (It is not' bernyanyi or menyanyi)

Saya menyanyi. = Saya bernyanyi.
I sing. (the output is I made myself singing)


Saya bertanya kepada dia.
I ask to him. (I have a question(output) and then I ask it to him)


Saya menanyakan tentang...
I ask about... (here 'ask' verb is in normal state for simple sentence)


Only some verbs can be added by ber- prefix.


another e.g.:

Saya membaca buku.
I read a book.

Saya membaca.
I read. (this cannot use ber- prefix)
