I think some shades might be added though. In its first meaning amener means "lead somewhere" and mostly refer to a person or an animal (flocks mostly). In this case, amener focuses on the goal (the arrival) when emmener focuses more on the departure or the journey itself. Here are some examples in which amener is used with a person or an animal :

- Je t'amène un ami ! (I bring you a friend)
- j'ai amené mon fils chez la nourrice (I brought my son to the nanny)

In both these examples, emmener could have been used and the meaning would be pretty close. So, amener is not necessarily for objects.

Amener can also express the fact that you changed your mind due to something specific (still the same idea, you were led to another way of seeing things).
- Cette expérience l'a amené à voir les choses différemment = this experience made him see things in a different way

I hope it's clear, I'm under the impression that my sentences in English sound odd :)

Elise's answer is correct, but that rule is not really followed in everyday life anymore. Because the two words sound very similar, most people use Amener and Emmener as if they were identical. The difference between the two nowadays, for those who make it, is that "Emmener" insists on a starting point, and "Amener" insists on a destination. While not 100% exact, you could say that :

Emmener = to take along = 連れて行く

Amener = to bring along = 連れて来る

I didn't say she was wrong I just wanted to point out that amener is not only used for objects. I thought it could be relevant in case of the learner reading some sentences with amener and a person. Actually, this is not a current misuse of the word amener. Before writing my answer, to be sure, I checked in both the Larousse and the TLF and the first meaning of amener is used with a person/animal (sens littéral). :) as I wrote in my previous answer I totally agree with you on the fact that amener has more to see with the goal :)

- Tu m'amènes à la Gare de Lyon ? (take somebody/something TO PUT A PLACE. )
- J'emmène ma fille à la piscine. (take somebody/somthing TO LEAD)
- Dites-moi ce qui vous a amené à cette conclusion. ("amener" can use for the mind too)
