kindergarten: age 3-6
elementary school: age 6-11 (5 years)
middle school: 11-14 (3 years)
high school: 14-19 (5 years)
university: generally 3 years (then you need to take a master or something: 2 years more), but some of them last 5 (law for example) or 6 (medicine)
there are people who start school at the age of 5, being younger than their classmates.
Grades are generally expressed in numbers from 1 to 10 until high school, while in university marks range from 18 (the minimum to pass) to 30, and if you do extremely well you could get a "honour", we call it 30 e lode (30L).
About graduating, we have finals at middle school (your final mark is expressed with number 6-10/10L), at high school (from 60 to 100, eventually with honour: 100L), at university you can graduate with a maximum of 110/110L.
There are public and private schools and universities. Public schools are more popular; private universities are attended as well as public ones.

Italian school system is composed by:
0-3 years old ->asilo nido: often private, there they take care of little children
3-5/6 years old-> scuola materna: children play and start to learn simple english vocabulary. They also do some preparation for writing and sometimes start also to learn the alphabet. Scuola materna can be private or public but it's not imperative to attend. Some schools have more particular programs (like more english, sports etc)
6- 11 years old (5 years)-> scuola elementare: School starts to be mandatory. commonly public. Children learn italian, english, math, science, gymnastic, history, geography. Some school have treater classes or other group activities. Private elementary school are really costly and have good preparation but public schools are really good too. Classes are from 8,15-8,30 to 12,30-13 and sometimes even in afternoon, Monday to Saturday.
11-14 years old (3 years)-> scuola media: commonly public. Students study also art, music, religion, other languages, technical drawing and pc science.
14- 19 years old (5 years): scuola superiore. There are 3 different types: liceo, istituto tecnico, istituto professionale. Liceo is concentrated into studying, it has Latin, philosophy, Italian gramman and literature, English, history, art, geography; but there are different types: one is about classical studies, one about languages, one about science, ome about social studies, one about art. Istituto tecnico is less theoretical, and here also there are different types of school (economy, tourism, chemistry, pc science, electronics, art and so on). Istituto tecnico is the more practical and you have less things to study. There are different types of them (fashion, mechanics, tourism, social studies and so on). About private and public high school: public school are really good, liceum is the most "prestigious" because it can be easier to enter into universities. Private schools are not uncommon but there are two types: one really prestigious (international schools) and one with tutors to help students (it's consider easier).
Finally we have university and phd.
If you have more specific question, just tell me :)

In Italy there is a complicate school sistem. I try to explicate you all that I can. These are the types of school in Italy:
- Nursery (3-6 years old)
- Elementary school (6-11. years old)
- Middle school ( 11-14 years old)
-High school( 14-19 years old)
Of these types of school there are both private and public schools. There is no a big difference between them but the public ones are a bit more difficult because you don't have to pay for them and the private ones have got more services (like schools trips or amusements). Until middle school, all schools should be the same. While, there are different types of high school which depends on how much you are good and what you want to do in the future. They are:
- Liceo (linguistic, scientific, classical,...): you choose it if you want to go to university and if you are good in theoric subjects.
- Istituto tecnico(Finanza e marketing, turistico, industriale..): you can go to university but it's not always necessary and you choose it to do pratical and theoric subjects
- Istituto professionale(alberghiero, Ipsar...): you don't have to go to university and you do lots of pratical things
- Scuola professionale( panettieri, parrucchieri, estetista, meccanico..): they are only for three years to learn a pratical job.
The biggest part of italian students go to public schools.
There is an exam at the end of middle school and at the end of high school.
The universities are both private and public and everyone is different. There are more prestigious universities like Bocconi(private economic university in Milan), Politecnici di Torino and Milano( architecture and engegnering public universities), University of Pavia( public university for medicine), ecc.
If you want to ask me other questions, I'm here. I hope to explicated you in the best way possible.
