洋服の場合は、五分袖も半袖も同じで、肘までの長さのものを指します。和服の場合、半袖は袖の部分が半幅（約18cm）という意味なので、もう少し袖が短いものを指します。
ただし、実際には洋服でも「半袖」と言うと、和服の半袖に近い長さのものを指すことが多いように思います。
