What do Koreans say to their friend who tells them that someone they love has died? In America we say "I am sorry for your loss", but I've heard that saying "I'm sorry" to a Korean in this situation is seen as weird. So what do Koreans say?

(삼가)고인의 명복을 빕니다 - honorific and formal way(unnatural to say to friends or someone close)
'상심이 크겠다' is more natural when you say it to your friends and it has cery similar meaning as 'sorry for your loss'.
you can say it also in a formal and honorific way changing form to like'상심이 크시겠어요' '상심이 크시겠습니다.'
you can use it to somebody who lost their job or anything.
and there's no special phrase or sentence in this specific situation(someone dying) so you can just express your compassion in many ways.

Thank you for telling me about the less formal way for friends. It's interesting that it can also be used for the loss of a job and other things. Not having a special phrase to be expected to say is a little comforting.
