They used to sound different but now they do not. Only different for spelling purposes.
예쁘다(ㅖ) = pretty
얘기(ㅒ) = Story

Sounds are the same, but you should pay attention in writig them.
얘(이 아이), 걔(그 아이), 쟤(저 아이), 얘기(이야기, story), ...

ㅒ is shorten of ㅑ+ l.
and ㅖ is shorten of ㅕ+ ㅣ
ex) 이야기하다 (have some talk) = 얘기하다

I believe that when saying ㅐ your mouth should be wider open than when you say ㅔ, but it sounds pretty much exactly the same when spoken.

You should just memorize which words have ㅒ or ㅖ in your writing it’s the only way to use them
