say - to speak words.
usually I use say or said when I'm quoting someone.
Tell - communicate information
I use tell when there is an object in the sentence "I told myself..." "Tell him what you need." "Tell me about yourself."
Talk - converse
"we talked on the phone." "we need to talk." "they just kept talking."
speak - when referring to languages or when you are delivering a monologue
"I'm not good at public speaking." "Do you speak English?" "I enjoyed your speech."
we all mess up sometimes so usually we understand what you mean regardless.
