"He is a student and I am a teacher." is the correct sentence.
"," is called a "comma." Commas are usually used many ways.
The most difficult use is to break up long sentences.
Examples:
"He is a student and I am a teacher, but we are the same age."
"She is a doctor and he is a teacher, but they are friends."
"Although I asked for cheese, I did not get any."
Another use is listing things.
Examples:
"He is a student, I am a teacher, and she is a doctor."
"I asked for cheese, tomatoes, and celery."
