Sari is not compulsory, but its the most common attire for Indian married women in India. It is most common in the states of Bengal and Orissa. In northern states like Punjab, Haryana or Gujrat, Salwar suits are more common along with kurtis and ghagra choli.

@kamiliuxa its not compulsory but most women do wear there are also many women who don't wear sari on a regular basis but during festival many women do wear the traditional clothes like sari and salwar kurta
