What do British people think of Italians? Are we really famous just for food and bad politicians? I know it is a general question that could take to stereotypes, but I am curious to know!

Yes, you are very famous for your food because Italian food is probably one of the favourite cuisines here. Our other stereotypes for Italians are that they like and are good at football (but that may have changed recently :/) and another stereotype is that all Italians eat is pasta.

@EmperorIguana42 well, I actually think Italian food is very tasty and, yes, this is true: many and many Italians are obsessed with football. But no, we do not eat only pasta and pizza. Fish and meal are a big part of our cuisine! What about Italian writers, poets and artists in general? Are they known and appreciated?

@SerenaGranato96 Well we know about Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci and I believe their work is appreciated but I don't know much about art to be honest :/

@EmperorIguana42 Giotto, Caravaggio, Botticelli are other important names. I'd be happy if our literature would be spread abroad, as I think knowing other literatures make you richer as a person and the Italian one has much to offer. Moreover, it is very different from the English one (which I love very much as well), with few exceptions (for example Boccaccio's Decameron and Chaucer'd Canterbury Tales, which have a similar structure)

The Divine Comedy is pretty well known, even if not many people read it. Umberto Eco is pretty popular. I can’t say that I know many in between, though! (Machiavelli being more a theorist than literary, I guess).
I slightly associate places in Italy with Shakespeare, because he set so many plays in Italy, like Venice, Verona, Padua, Genoa and (ancient) Rome.
A stereotype I have, not knowing how true it is, is that Italian society has quite strict ideas about gender- that men are not taken seriously if they cook for themselves, for example.

@NathanH thanks for your comment. I'm happy that the Divine Commedy is known. About your stereotype, I can say that maybe it exists in some cases. There are big differences between cities and small towns. In small towns strict ideas about gender exist in old-minded family and I can say it is true because I live in a town which has less then one thousand people (no, I did not ger confused in writing the number... we really are less than 1000) and I've always perceived my family as different because both my parent took care of me when I was a child in the same measure, both my parents cook, both my parents clean up the house and so on. When I started university I moved to a big city and I feel like here there are not such gender stereotypes, at least in the families in whom both wife and husband work.
