Is there a difference between "не понимаю" and "не поиял"? I understand that one is past and one is present, but I've seen them both used to show when someone doesn't understand something.

If I don't understand what the other person said, should I use "не понимаю" or "не поняла"? Can I use both?

The difference is that the first is present tense and the second is past.

Я не понимаю - I don't understand (I'm not understanding right now)

Я не поняла - I didn't understand

You can use either :)

A little amend: "не понял" is past, and also past perfect (English present perfect).
