"I was afraid to drop the vase" or "I was afraid of dropping the vase".

So, it says: "The vase was very valuable, so I held it carefully". My textbook says I should say "I was afraid of dropping the vase". Yet, I think it should be "I was afraid to drop the vase". As far as I know, you're supposed to use "afraid of (do)ing" when you are talking about the result of your action. I think it should be something like "I was afraid to drop the vase because I was afraid of it breaking into pieces". Am I wrong?
